3 Essential Non-Music Skills DJs Should Learn Right Now
Perfecting your craft can take years. Learning to mix, beat match, and staying up-to-date with the latest music releases can be cumbersome. But there are a lot of DJs out there that neglect the other side of being an all-around good DJ.
Read up on a few essential non-music skills you should be learning.
Ability to Network
This one is easy once you get it down. Networking is a valuable resource to have as a DJ. Why? Because you’re mostly on your own out there. It’s up to you and how well you hustle! Going to different DJ-centric events, meet-ups, or even going to another DJ’s set at a venue to show support are all good networking opportunities. Growing your circle and getting to know the right people will offer more opportunities in the future.
Being a Good Entertainer and Host
DJ = Entertainment. If you don’t have this down you better take some classes on public speaking ASAP. Having great communication skills, especially in front of an audience is key. Charisma and clear communication is central to being a good entertainer. If you’re shy or a natural introvert it might take some getting used to, but you’ll get there! Just keep practicing your public persona…maybe in front of a mirror at first 😂.
Being a DJ means you are essentially building your own business. What do most most (successful) businesses have? Great branding. Branding is an often-forgotten strategy with a lot of DJs. So where do you begin if you haven’t crafted your own branding? Start with a logo. If you don’t have the necessary tools to create your own logo, outsource to a designer. Pretty sure you know at least one graphic designer, but if you don’t go on Fiverr. There are plenty of designers out there waiting to make the perfect logo for you. Once you have a logo use it everywhere and often. Use it on all your flyers, change your social media profile pictures to your logo, and any other promo you have. This is the way to get people to recognize your brand and let it retain in their memory.
