Celebrating Prodigy and Mobb Deep’s Music Legacy

With the news of Prodigy’s passing, we’re taking a look at the legacy left behind.

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” as said in an original statement to Rolling Stone.

Immediately after the news broke, an outpouring of sympathy from friends and colleagues of Prodigy appeared through personal tributes and heartfelt posts. Particularly moving was a post by Mobb Deep’s other half and Prodigy’s longtime partner, Havoc, a.k.a. Kejuan Muchita, with a simple caption reading ‘Forever’.

Mobb Deep is known for their hardcore hip-hop style and raw interpretation of the East Coast rap scene. Growing up in Queens, New York City together, Havoc and Prodigy released their first demo together in 1992 and ultimately found success in their 1995 release of The Infamous. They’d go on to release eight records together, with their most recent in 2014, titled The Infamous Mobb Deep.
