New Technics SL-1200GAE/G Are Finally Here

After a year of waiting the latest Technics SL-1200GAE/G are finally available to buy. And they’re not cheap. Read all about it!

Last January Technics (a division of Panasonic) revealed they were working on a modern version of the classic Technics SL-1200 turntable by popular request. Then in July they uploaded an impressive demo video that is at the top of the page. Now the first Technics SL-1200GAE/G are available for purchase in the US for about $4,000.

The latest version costs more because the company had to invest in a brand new manufacturing facility this time around. According to Tetsuya Itani, CTO at Technics, in an interview with What Hi*Fi, “The cost was the biggest problem for us, from the start of the project. Because the original 1210 turntables were manufactured for so many years, the manufacturing process had got to a very low cost. Now we need to invest in all the tools again, and the price now is much higher than the 1970s.”

Itani goes on to explain that they literally had to rebuild the factory from scratch because everything was falling apart or not functioning. He mentions they did keep the dust covers.

Each turntable is manufactured in a cleanroom environment by skilled Japanese technicians. To learn more about the Technics manufacturing process watch this video.

This Saturday, October 29 Technics will give a special presentation at Cherubini, a massive music store based in Rome that has achieved cult status since opening in the 1950s. Technics representatives will be on hand to give all the details of the Technics 2016 range, including the new turntable Grand Class SL-1200GAE/G.

As of this blog posting the Technics SL-1200GAE/G is for sale by authorized distributors in the US and Europe.

Update: An earlier version of this blog posting stated that the Technics SL-1200GAE/G was only for sale in Germany. Since then Technics has made them available in other countries.
