New Snapchat Glasses Record First Person Footage
Snapchat’s upcoming Spectacles shoot ten-second video clips at a wider angle than your smartphone. The new product will be coming soon.
The news of Snapchat Spectacles comes at the same time that they decided to shorten their company name to Snap Inc. The new technology lets you record ten-second video clips and wirelessly upload them to Memories on Snapchat. The spectacles have a 115 degree wide angle camera lens that mimics the form of the human eye. Blinking lights tell your followers when you’re making a snap, and the case doubles as a charger.
According to Snap Inc:
“We’ve been working for the past few years to develop a totally new type of camera. We call it Spectacles! Imagine one of your favorite memories. What if you could go back and see that memory the way you experienced it? That’s why we built Spectacles. Spectacles are sunglasses with an integrated video camera that makes it easy to create Memories…Spectacles will be available soon.”
Unlike the rectangular Snaps you see on the phone, the glasses produces a circular video frame that plays full screen on any device. The 115 degree field of vision is similar to the way that humans physically see in the real world.
According to CNET Snapchat acquired Vergance Labs in 2014. Vergance Labs is a firm that designs camera glasses. The rumor was that Snapchat was working on a new project, and now it seems like this is it.
Evan Spiegel, the founder of Snapchat, is 26 years old. The estimated value of Snap Inc. at this time is $16 billion to $22 billion. Spiegel is engaged to supermodel Miranda Kerr.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Snapchat Spectacles will cost $129.99 (£100, AU$170). There is no official word on a release date.
