UNILAD Launches Label; Looking for Pop Singers

UK based media company UNILAD has announced they are starting a record label via online marketplace Music Gateway. The imprint is looking for pop singers.

UNILAD is a popular entertainment website that produces memes and viral videos from their headquarters in Manchester, England. It began as a blog for college-age men (university + lad = unilad) but with with over 21 million likes on Facebook and counting they have evolved into a more general publishing and production studio. Now they want to release pop music in the vein of Backstreet Boys or Fifth Harmony.

To be considered for the UNILAD label that is launching next year, artists must sign up for an account at Music Gateway in order to read the full project description. It says that UNILAD is hunting for the right artists to represent the company to their audience. They want pop singers or groups, male or female, ideally between the ages of 14 to 23.

For men on point harmonies are a must. As reference points UNILAD gives Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Zayn Malik, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, One Direction, Boyz 2 Men and Backstreet Boys.

Dancing skills are encouraged for female participants. They mention liking Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Emeli Sande, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Ariana Grande, Adele, the Pussycat Dolls, Little Mix, En Vogue and 5th Harmony.

So it looks like we can expect some awesome music from UNILAD in the future that is clearly being made for the right reasons — if that means making a lot of money off art without caring that much about the finished product.

According to Kevin Tewis-Allen, Global Director of Business Development at UNILAD:

“UNILAD are delighted to be working with Music Gateway in order to find the best new global musical talent. UNILAD are most interested in singers that can also perform live. As a leading global publisher we naturally have millions of followers and have reached out to our A&R partner, Music Gateway to help manage our A&R process and submissions.”

Interested parties should submit a video of a live performance, such a cover or original song. MP3 files are also acceptable. Be sure to fill out your Music Gateway profile in full with music, videos, photos and an artist biography.
